30 Years Ago, They Delivered Their First Preemie

As I listened to Debbie tell the story of her son Joshua, the first preemie baby born at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital thirty years ago, I didn’t realize that my husband was listening, too. The video ended, and when I looked over, I saw that he had teared up a bit.

I can’t imagine having to have gone through that with our kids. I know how hard that must have been.

As moms and dads, it’s easy to imagine the thoughts and feelings of parents whose baby was born so early–so little and so precarious. It’s also easy to celebrate the story’s very happy ending. Listen to the full story…

30 years later…

Today, Henrico Doctors’ Hospital still provides excellent support to tiny newborns like Joshua. And this month, they announced the opening of their new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

You’ve likely heard that they’ve been expanding their Women’s Hospital. This final phase features the largest community-based Level III NICU (which means that they can provide care to very small and very sick babies) in Central Virginia. And, it’s the only NICU with 24/7 neonatologists on-site! It’s a state-of-the-art women’s health facility:

  • 40 NICU and Progressive Care Nursery treatment areas
  • 33 private rooms
  • Four sets of connected rooms for twins
  • A transitional nursery
  • A family support lounge
  • Training and educational rooms for parent
  • The latest technology
  • Brand new patient monitoring system
  • Advanced communications system for patients, providers, and staff

We had a preview of the facility earlier this year at our Bloom event, and we saw first hand that it’s not only state-of-the-art, it’s also a gorgeous facility. Take a look at the rooms!

“The newly renovated unit sets a new standard of care in the Richmond community and enables our team to provide our tiniest of patients with access to high-quality, comprehensive care, on an even greater scale,” said Will Wagnon, chief executive officer at Henrico Doctors’ Hospitals.

See the new facility for yourself! Give them a call at 804-289-4500. They’ll be happy to help you learn more about their NICU services and schedule a personal tour.
